Some teachers wait for as long as six years! Judith Cohen, pictured at left, has been in the rubber room for three years, collecting her full salary along with 700 other New York City public school teachers. Throw in scissors and show me the door, please. I would guess that most of the teachers in the rubber rooms of New York don't really belong there. A Jewish education center in Miami faces foreclosure by Regions Bank . The Lubavitch Education Center ’s 84,020-square-foot, seven-story building on seven acres, along with two other properties, is named in the $8 million foreclosure lawsuit filed on June 23 by the Birmingham, Ala-based bank in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court. The nonprofit center is affiliated with the Chabad Lubavitch, an orthodox Jewish movement that has temples and education centers throughout the world. Rabbi Bentzion Korf, who is listed on the Lubavitch Education Center’s Web site as the director, manages both entities, which took an $8 million loan from the bank in 2004. In addition to the main campus, which is located near Golden Glades, the foreclosure targets the 30,750-square-foot education center at 1114 Alton Road in Miami Beach and a 3,363-square-foot apartment building at 1231 13th St. Miami-based attorney Elizabeth Dombovary, who represents Regions Bank in the lawsuit, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment. read more

Prince George's County Board of Education May Name Upper Marlboro School After Obama - washingtonpost. President Obama's name would grace a new Prince George's County elementary school a few miles from the White House under a proposal scheduled for a vote tonight, barely five months after he took office. If the Prince George's Board of Education approves the plan, Barack Obama Elementary School would be the first in the Washington region named after the president. The Hempstead Union Free School District in New York voted to rename Ludlum Elementary School for him in November shortly after his victory in the presidential election. Former school board member Judy Mickens-Murray, who describes herself as a "100 percent" Obama supporter, said that it is too soon to name a school after him. read more

PROS AND CONS OF ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMS During your search to find an online degree program, you may run across articles that will belittle these programs and say that they are not worth spending your time and money pursuing. While this is true of many online degree programs, most degree programs can benefit you in a variety of ways. Only you can determine whether an online program is the right one for you, but you should consider the pros and cons very carefully so that you can make an informed decision. Taking classes online may be the only way for you to earn a degree. Pros: Online programs give you the freedom to study at your own pace. Online programs are easier to get to than traditional class room learning. Online programs could cost less than other degree programs. Online programs give you the freedom to travel for business or go on vacation without having to miss deadlines and classroom discussions. Instructors are just as qualified as other instructors in traditional degree programs. If you are self-motivated, you will enjoy the freedom of learning by yourself. Cons: Some people prefer learning in a classroom environment. Some online degree programs are not accredited. If you are not self-motivated, you may fall behind. You have to have a basic understanding of computers. You may not receive as much personal feedback as you would like. You may not find the time to study. As with any endeavour, there will be pros and cons. You will need to weigh each of these and decide what is best for you. Having other people in the classroom can motivate and teach. But if you prefer learning at your own pace and do not require other people to assist you, then an online degree program may be for you.
